The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering simplifying agricultural water standards under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) due to stakeholder feedback. The feedback included concern that the standards, which include numerical criteria for pre-harvest microbial water quality, would be too difficult to understand and implement by many producers. Although these standards are important to agricultural water safety, the FDA is working to create balanced regulations that are practical for all. Specifically the FDA will be collaborating with stakeholders and exploring ways to simplify the microbial quality and testing requirements. As more information becomes available the Local Food Safety Collaborative will continuing updating local producers and processors.
